The concept of modernism in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is one that is significantly more subtle than it is obvious. For when we study separatist nationalism we are studying not alone something of Ireland, but the failed variant of British nationalism too. As compared to romanticism and realism, naturalism is a more recent movement in the literary cycle. I buy the ‘Social Democracy vs Markets’ argument about the genesis of the economics Nobel in the 1960s, but I’m not sure the evolution of the Prize is as clear cut as it could be, after awards to people like Oliver Williamson and Lin Ostrom and Vernon Smith.
