The concept of a particle with half-integer spin is just another example of the apparently counter-intuitive nature of sub-atomic particles: crudely speaking, a fermion such as an electron has to spin around TWICE before it presents the same face as before. It arises from the supposition that before a measurement is made, particles exist in a sort of limbo state, being neither here nor there while retaining the possibility of either.
